My name is Rachel, I am a black doula, of Haitian origin of African descent and I am a mother of three wonderful daughters. I did my Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and Kinesiology at Concordia University.
During my first pregnancy at age 24, I had the disappointment of dealing with a rude and condescending doctor and an inhumane medical system. In tears, I decided not to submit to this kind of treatment anymore and to find a midwife for my birth
I gave birth to my three daughters at home, in my living room. Once in the USA and twice in Canada, all with the support of midwives. This experience transformed me and made me realize my strength and my feminine power. I became passionate about the birthing experience and in 2015 started educating women on childbirth preparation.
I have helped more than a hundred women in my practice KISAYA BIRTH and I have assisted and accompanied many women during their births at home, in birth centers and in hospitals as a doula.
I have developed doula trainings centered on the experience of black, African and Caribbean women, which speak to our realities as black mothers and I work to create an international community of black doulas and black women who work in perinatal care!
I want to prevent trauma and educate women about their bodies, their rights and encourage empowerment. I also do it for our daughters, so that they don't have to suffer the same treatment, violence, neglect and limitations as us.
I give free 20-minute consultations to give everyone the opportunity to have answers and know how to prepare and protect themselves in childbirth. I also do postpartum care such as postpartum massages and traditional herbal baths, vaginal steam bath (yoni steam) and rituals.
I want women to realize their power, and take charge of their birthing experiences.
This is why I became a doula. Too many women around me had traumatic experiences often through lack of education and trust in a system that doesn't protect us especially as black women. My mission is to educate and assist women so that they can have a positive birth experience with confidence, support and respect.
I focus on empowerment, education and creative a supportive and safe space for the person giving birth. I want to help reestablish the sacredness of birth.
